This text is arguably a personal attempt to understand a man who I did not personally know, but whose life is very much part of public record. It is a life that has had considerable impact on Barbadian and Caribbean society over a significant period of time. Owen Seymour Arthur was prime minister of Barbados for some fourteen years, having won three consecutive terms for the Barbados Labour Party, of which he was the leader. It can be said that in that space of time he very much dominated the political life of Barbados.
