St. Kitts & Nevis most iconic cricketer, Elquemedo Tonito Willett, MBE, was recently toasted by the Western Hemisphere’s smallest nation, now in its 40th year of Independence from Great Britain, in a major celebration, dubbed ‘Classy at 50’. Fifty years ago, on March 9, 1973, while the twin-island state was yet a colony, Willett became the first cricketer from the Leeward Islands to play Test cricket for the West Indies. He was quickly followed in 1974, by world-renown Antiguans, the Master Blaster, Sir Vivian Richards, national hero, and fearsome speedster, Sir Andy Roberts.
Veteran Nevisian sports journalist, Stevenson Manners, in his new book to commemorate the landmark event, ‘The Father, Son & Offsprings, captures the amazing evolution of the game in the tiny 36-squaremile Caribbean island of Nevis, one of the most prolific pieces of cricketing real estate in the world. Witha population of just under 12, 000 people, Nevis has produced seven international cricketers, among the highest per capita, in the world.
